About Columbus Campus of Ohio State University

The Columbus Campus is the main campus of the Ohio State University, a public land-grant research university located in Columbus, Ohio. Established in 1870 as the Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College, the institution opened its doors to students in 1873 and was renamed The Ohio State University in 1878. The Columbus campus serves as the administrative and academic heart of the university system, which also includes regional campuses at Lima, Mansfield, Marion, Newark, and Wooster.

The campus is situated a few miles north of downtown Columbus, bordered in part by the Olentangy River. It is one of the largest university campuses in the United States by enrollment.

Academically, the Columbus campus is organized into numerous colleges and schools spanning fields such as the arts and sciences, engineering, business, law, medicine, agriculture, and education. The university is classified among institutions of very high research activity, and its Columbus campus hosts the majority of its research facilities, libraries, and laboratories. The Wexner Medical Center, located on campus, is a major academic medical complex encompassing hospitals, clinics, and health sciences colleges.

The campus is known for several prominent landmarks. Ohio Stadium, opened in 1922 and nicknamed "the Horseshoe," is the home of the Ohio State Buckeyes football team and one of the largest stadiums in the country. The William Oxley Thompson Memorial Library serves as the main library, and the Ohio Union functions as the central student activities building. The Oval, a large open green space at the center of campus, is a defining feature of the grounds.

The university's athletic teams, the Buckeyes, compete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I as members of the Big Ten Conference, with most home venues located on or near the Columbus campus.
