About Columbus Zoo and Aquarium

The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium is a nonprofit zoo located in Powell, Ohio, United States, in the northern part of the Columbus metropolitan area. It sits along the banks of the O'Shaughnessy Reservoir on the Scioto River.

The zoo opened in 1927. It is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and is home to more than 10,000 animals representing hundreds of species.

The facility is divided into several themed regions, including Asia Quest, Heart of Africa, North America, Polar Frontier, Australia and the Islands, Congo Expedition, and Shores and Aquarium. The Shores region houses the aquarium, which features marine and freshwater species such as sharks, coral reef fish, and manatees; the zoo has participated in the rehabilitation of manatees as part of a program in cooperation with other institutions.

The Columbus Zoo became widely known through its longtime association with Jack Hanna, who served as director beginning in 1978 and later held the title of director emeritus. His frequent television appearances brought national attention to the institution.

Adjacent to the zoo are two additional attractions operated by the same organization: Zoombezi Bay, a water park that opened in 2008, and the Safari Golf Club. The zoo has consistently received high rankings among American zoos and supports a range of conservation and research initiatives both regionally and internationally.
