About Cleveland Hopkins International Airport
Cleveland Hopkins International Airport (IATA: CLE, ICAO: KCLE) is an international airport located in Cleveland, Ohio, United States. It is situated approximately 10 miles (16 km) southwest of downtown Cleveland, in the Hopkins neighborhood. The airport is owned and operated by the City of Cleveland and serves as the primary commercial airport for the Greater Cleveland metropolitan area and Northeast Ohio.
The airport opened in 1925 and was named after Cleveland's first city manager, William R. Hopkins. It holds a notable place in aviation history as one of the first municipally owned airports in the United States. Over the decades, Cleveland Hopkins introduced several innovations, including being among the first airports to establish a ground-to-air radio control system and the first to be directly connected to a city's downtown by a rapid transit rail line, which opened in 1968.
Cleveland Hopkins covers roughly 1,700 acres of land and features multiple runways. It has served as a hub for various airlines over the years, most notably as a hub for Continental Airlines and later United Airlines, though United ended its hub operations at the airport in 2014. Today it operates primarily as an origin-and-destination airport.
The airport offers passenger service to numerous domestic destinations and select international destinations, and it also handles significant cargo operations. Its rail connection, the RTA Red Line, links the airport directly to downtown Cleveland and the broader Regional Transit Authority network.
Cleveland Hopkins remains the busiest airport in the state of Ohio by passenger traffic, serving millions of passengers annually.
