Capitola was founded in 1869 by Frederick Hihn and is considered one of the oldest seaside resort towns on the Pacific Coast of the United States. It was originally known as Soquel Landing, a shipping point for lumber and agricultural goods. In 1874, Samuel Alonzo Hall leased the land from Hihn and established a camping resort, renaming it Capitola after a character in the novel The Hidden Hand by E.D.E.N. Southworth.
The city was incorporated on January 4, 1949. It covers a total area of approximately 1.7 square miles (4.4 km²), of which about 1.6 square miles is land. Capitola is bordered by the unincorporated communities of Soquel to the north and Live Oak to the west, and lies roughly 5 miles southeast of the city of Santa Cruz.
Notable landmarks include Capitola Village, a pedestrian-oriented downtown area featuring colorful stucco buildings known as the Venetian Court, built in 1924 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Capitola Wharf, originally constructed in 1857, extends into Monterey Bay and is used for fishing and recreation. Soquel Creek flows through the village and empties into the bay at Capitola Beach.
The local economy is largely driven by tourism, retail, and hospitality. Annual events include the Capitola Art and Wine Festival and the Begonia Festival, the latter held from 1952 until 2017.
Capitola has a Mediterranean climate with mild, wet winters and warm, dry summers. The city is served by State Route 1 and operates under a council-manager form of government.
