The area was first settled by Europeans in 1769 and was incorporated as a town in 1791, named after Charles Pratt, 1st Earl Camden, an English lawyer and politician who was sympathetic to the American colonies. In 1891, the northern portion of the town separated to form the neighboring town of Rockport.

Camden is known for its harbor and its setting between the Camden Hills and Penobscot Bay. Camden Hills State Park encompasses much of the surrounding highlands, including Mount Battie and Mount Megunticook, the latter being one of the highest points on the mainland Atlantic coast of the United States. A summit road and a stone tower on Mount Battie provide views over the town and bay.

The local economy historically relied on shipbuilding, lime production, and the manufacture of woolen goods and other products powered by the Megunticook River. In the 20th century, tourism became a central part of the economy, and Camden is today recognized as a summer resort community and a homeport for windjammer sailing vessels.

The town has appeared in film, most notably serving as a filming location for the 1957 movie Peyton Place. Camden is also home to the annual U.S. National Toboggan Championships, held on a wooden toboggan chute at the Camden Snow Bowl, a municipally owned ski area.
