About Calistoga
Calistoga is a city located in Napa County, California, United States, situated in the northern part of the Napa Valley. The city was incorporated in 1886 and covers an area of approximately 2.6 square miles. According to the 2020 United States Census, Calistoga has a population of 5,228 residents. The city sits at an elevation of 362 feet above sea level and is positioned about 70 miles north of San Francisco.

The area was originally inhabited by the Wappo Native American tribe before European settlement. The modern city was founded by Sam Brannan, a Mormon pioneer and entrepreneur, who purchased land in the area in 1859. Brannan developed the location as a resort destination, combining the names "California" and "Saratoga" to create the name Calistoga, referencing the famous Saratoga Springs resort in New York.
Calistoga is renowned for its natural hot springs and geothermal activity, which stems from its location near the dormant Mount Saint Helena volcano. The city's economy is primarily based on tourism, viticulture, and hospitality services. The area is home to numerous wineries and vineyards that produce premium wines, particularly Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay varieties.
Notable attractions include Old Faithful Geyser of California, one of only three regularly erupting geysers in the world, which shoots water approximately 60 feet high every 30 minutes. The Petrified Forest, located just outside the city, features ancient redwood trees that were turned to stone by volcanic ash approximately 3.4 million years ago. Schramsberg Winery, established in 1862, is California's first hillside winery and specializes in sparkling wine production.
The city hosts several annual events, including the Napa County Fair and the Calistoga Harvest Festival. Calistoga's downtown area features historic buildings, boutique shops, restaurants, and numerous spas that utilize the area's natural mineral hot springs for therapeutic treatments.
