About Boston T
The Boston T subway system forms the backbone of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA). Founded in 1897, it is the oldest subway system in the United States. The network includes four main lines: the Red, Orange, Blue, and Green lines.
The Red Line connects Cambridge, Somerville, and Quincy to downtown Boston. The Orange Line connects Jamaica Plain and Malden. The Blue Line runs from Revere to downtown Boston, passing through East Boston. The Green Line, the most complex, operates as light rail with branch lines serving various western suburbs.
All lines intersect at key interchanges, facilitating efficient movement of passengers throughout the region. The system faces challenges such as aging infrastructure and capacity constraints, but it continues to play a critical role in daily travel and urban mobility. The MBTA continues to work to modernize and expand the network to meet growing demand and improve service reliability.
