About Avalon
State: California.
County: Los Angeles.
Population: ~ 3,500.
Avalon is the only incorporated city on Santa Catalina Island, located in Los Angeles County, California, approximately 22 miles (35 km) southwest of the mainland coast. The city was incorporated in 1913.
The city is situated on the eastern shore of the island along Avalon Bay. It serves as the primary point of entry for visitors arriving by ferry from ports including San Pedro, Long Beach, and Dana Point. Due to strict vehicle restrictions on the island, golf carts are among the most common forms of personal transportation within the city.
In 1919, businessman William Wrigley Jr. purchased Santa Catalina Island and significantly invested in its infrastructure and tourism development. The Catalina Casino, a circular Art Deco building completed in 1929, remains one of the most recognized landmarks of Avalon. Despite its name, the building was never used for gambling; it contains a ballroom and a movie theater.
Approximately 88% of Santa Catalina Island is owned and managed by the Catalina Island Conservancy, a nonprofit organization established in 1972.
