About Austin–Bergstrom International Airport

Austin–Bergstrom International Airport (IATA: AUS, ICAO: KAUS) is a public airport located in Austin, Texas, serving as the primary commercial airport for the Austin metropolitan area. The airport is situated approximately 5 miles southeast of downtown Austin and covers 4,242 acres of land.

The facility opened in 1999, replacing the former Robert Mueller Municipal Airport as Austin's main commercial aviation hub. Austin–Bergstrom was built on the site of the former Bergstrom Air Force Base, which operated from 1942 to 1993. The airport was named after Captain John August Earl Bergstrom, a World War II pilot from Austin who was killed in the Philippines in 1941.

The airport features two runways: the primary Runway 17L/35R measuring 12,250 feet in length, and Runway 17R/35L measuring 9,000 feet. The main terminal building, designed by Page Southerland Page, incorporates distinctive architectural elements reflecting Austin's cultural identity, including live music venues and local art installations.

Austin–Bergstrom serves as a focus city for Southwest Airlines and handles over 17 million passengers annually, making it one of the busiest airports in Texas. The airport offers direct flights to major domestic destinations and select international routes to Mexico, Canada, and Europe.

The facility operates 24 hours daily and includes two concourses with a total of 34 gates. Notable features include the airport's commitment to sustainability, live music performances, and local food vendors representing Austin's culinary scene.
