The city was incorporated in 1831 and derives its name from the Apalachicola people, a Native American tribe that historically inhabited the region. During the 19th century, Apalachicola developed as a significant cotton port, serving as a shipping point for cotton grown in Georgia and Alabama that was transported down the Apalachicola River. The city's strategic location made it one of the busiest ports on the Gulf Coast during the antebellum period.

Apalachicola's economy is primarily based on commercial fishing, particularly oyster harvesting from Apalachicola Bay, which has historically been one of Florida's most productive oyster beds. The city is also known for its seafood processing industry and tourism. The historic downtown district features numerous 19th-century buildings that reflect the city's maritime heritage and cotton trade era.

Notable attractions include the Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve, which protects over 246,000 acres of coastal habitat. The John Gorrie Museum State Park honors Dr. John Gorrie, who invented an early form of air conditioning while practicing medicine in Apalachicola during the 1840s. The Apalachicola Maritime Museum showcases the area's maritime history and culture.

The city's historic district contains several significant structures, including the Trinity Episcopal Church, built in 1838, and the Raney House, a Greek Revival mansion constructed in 1838. The Apalachicola Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972, recognizing the architectural and historical significance of the area's antebellum buildings.

Climate-wise, Apalachicola experiences a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and mild winters. The city is accessible via U.S. Route 98 and State Road 65. The nearest major airport is Tallahassee Regional Airport, located approximately 80 miles northeast of the city.
