About Kyiv

Kyiv (also Kiev) is the capital and largest city of Ukraine, located in the north-central part of the country on the Dnieper River. With a population of approximately 3 million people (2021), it serves as the cultural, scientific, educational, and industrial center of Eastern Europe.

Founded in the 5th century, Kyiv has a rich history spanning over 1,500 years. According to legend, the city was established by three brothers Kyi, Shchek, and Khoryv, and their sister Lybid. The city became the capital of Kievan Rus, the first East Slavic state, in the 9th century. During the Golden Age of Kyiv (11th-12th centuries), it was one of the largest and most powerful cities in Europe.

The city's most notable landmarks include the Saint Sophia Cathedral, built in the 11th century and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra (Monastery of the Caves), a historic Orthodox Christian monastery founded in 1051. The Golden Gate, a reconstructed medieval gateway, and Saint Andrew's Church are other significant historical monuments. Modern Kyiv features the Independence Square (Maidan Nezalezhnosti), which has been the focal point of several historical events, including the Orange Revolution and the Revolution of Dignity.

Kyiv is a major educational hub with over 200 higher educational institutions, including the prestigious Taras Shevchenko National University. The city's economy is primarily based on services, with significant sectors including IT, finance, and tourism. The Kyiv Metro, opened in 1960, serves as the city's primary public transportation system, carrying over 1 million passengers daily.

The city is known for its green spaces, including numerous parks and botanical gardens. Khreshchatyk Street, the main thoroughfare, and the adjacent historic district showcase impressive examples of Stalinist architecture and house various governmental, cultural, and commercial establishments.
