About Dar es Salaam

Dar es Salaam is the largest city and former capital of Tanzania, located on the eastern coast of Africa along the Indian Ocean. With a population of approximately 9 million people (2024), it serves as the country's primary economic and cultural hub. Although Dodoma is the official capital, Dar es Salaam remains Tanzania's most prominent city and hosts many government offices.

The city was founded in the 1860s by Sultan Majid bin Said of Zanzibar and was later developed as a port and trading center during German East Africa colonization. The name "Dar es Salaam" comes from Arabic, meaning "House of Peace." The city's port is one of the largest natural harbors in East Africa and handles over 90% of Tanzania's maritime trade.

Notable landmarks include the National Museum, Askari Monument, and the Karimjee Botanical Gardens. The city is home to the main campus of the University of Dar es Salaam, established in 1961. The Kivukoni Fish Market and Kariakoo Market are significant commercial centers that showcase local culture and trade.

Dar es Salaam experiences a tropical savanna climate with average temperatures ranging between 22°C and 32°C throughout the year. The city serves as a major transportation hub, featuring the Julius Nyerere International Airport and acting as the terminus for the TAZARA Railway, which connects Tanzania with Zambia.
