Tajikistan physical map
Description:
This map shows landforms in Tajikistan.
Tajikistan's physical map reveals a predominantly mountainous terrain, with more than 90% of its territory covered by various mountain ranges. The Pamir Mountains, often called the "Roof of the World," dominate the eastern part of the country, with peaks reaching heights over 7,000 meters. The highest point is Ismoil Somoni Peak (formerly Communism Peak), standing at 7,495 meters (24,590 feet).
The western region features the Fergana Valley, one of the most densely populated areas in Central Asia. The Kofarnihon, Vakhsh, and Panj rivers, which eventually form the Amu Darya, create vital water systems throughout the country. These river valleys contain most of Tajikistan's agricultural land and settlements.
The country's terrain can be divided into several distinct regions: the Pamir Mountains in the east, the Alay Mountains in the north, the Gissar-Alay ranges in the center, and the lowland valleys in the southwest. The Wakhan Corridor, a narrow strip of Afghan territory, separates Tajikistan from Pakistan in the southeast.
Significant glaciers cover approximately 6% of Tajikistan's total area, with the Fedchenko Glacier being the largest non-polar glacier in the world. The country's elevation ranges from 300 meters above sea level in the Syr Darya valley to 7,495 meters at Ismoil Somoni Peak. This dramatic variation in elevation creates diverse climatic zones and ecological systems throughout the territory.
The physical geography of Tajikistan significantly influences its climate, with sharp continental features and considerable variations depending on elevation. The mountain ranges act as natural barriers, affecting precipitation patterns and creating distinct microclimates across different regions.
