About Dushanbe
Dushanbe is the capital and largest city of Tajikistan, located in the Hisor Valley in the western part of the country. With a population of approximately 1,564,700 (March 2024), it serves as the main political, economic, cultural, and industrial center of the nation.
The city's name "Dushanbe" means "Monday" in Tajik, as it developed from a village that hosted a popular Monday market. Until 1929, the city was known as Dyushambe, and from 1929 to 1961, it was called Stalinabad. After de-Stalinization, the city reverted to its original name.
Dushanbe features several notable landmarks and cultural institutions. The National Museum of Tajikistan, Rudaki Park, and the National Library are among its prominent attractions. The city's most recognizable monument is the Ismoil Somoni Statue, dedicated to the founder of the Samanid state. The Flagpole at National Palace, which stood as the world's tallest flagpole from 2011 to 2014, remains an impressive sight at 165 meters high.
The city experiences a Mediterranean climate with hot summers and mild winters. Located at an elevation of around 800 meters above sea level, Dushanbe is surrounded by snow-capped mountains, making it a gateway to numerous hiking and mountaineering destinations. The city serves as an important transportation hub with the Dushanbe International Airport connecting it to major Asian and European destinations.
