Sweden is a Nordic country located in Northern Europe, bordered by Norway to the west and Finland to the east. The country's total area is 173,860 square miles (450,295 square kilometers), making it the third-largest country in the European Union by area.
Administratively, Sweden is divided into 21 counties (län), which serve as the primary administrative subdivisions. These counties are further divided into 290 municipalities (kommuner). Stockholm serves as both the capital city and the most populous urban area in Sweden.
The nation operates as a parliamentary democracy and constitutional monarchy, with King Carl XVI Gustaf serving as the current head of state. The Swedish parliament, known as the Riksdag, consists of 349 members elected through proportional representation. The government is led by a Prime Minister, who is appointed by the parliament.
Three major regions traditionally make up Sweden: Norrland (the northern region), Svealand (the central region), and Götaland (the southern region). These historical regions, while not serving administrative purposes today, still hold cultural significance and are often referenced in geographical contexts.
The largest cities by population are Stockholm, Gothenburg, and Malmö, which function as important political, economic, and cultural centers. Each municipality has significant autonomy in local governance, including taxation rights and responsibility for schools, emergency services, and elderly care.
