About Uppsala
Uppsala is a historic city located in eastern Sweden, approximately 71 kilometers north of Stockholm. It serves as the capital of Uppsala County and is the fourth-largest city in Sweden, with a population of approximately 177,000 residents.
The city is renowned for its prestigious Uppsala University, founded in 1477, which is the oldest university in Scandinavia and consistently ranks among the world's top 100 educational institutions. The university's main building, constructed in the 1880s, is one of the city's most prominent landmarks.
The skyline of Uppsala is dominated by the magnificent Uppsala Cathedral, the largest cathedral in Scandinavia. Built in the 13th century, this Gothic cathedral stands 118.7 meters tall and serves as the seat of the Archbishop of Uppsala, the head of the Church of Sweden. The cathedral houses the tomb of King Gustav Vasa and other Swedish royalty.
Uppsala Castle, situated on a hill overlooking the city, was built in the 16th century during the reign of King Gustav Vasa. Today, it houses the Uppsala Art Museum and serves as the official residence of the County Governor. The castle's pink-colored facade is a distinctive feature of Uppsala's skyline.
The city is also home to the Uppsala Botanical Garden, established in 1655 by Carl Linnaeus, the father of modern taxonomy. The garden maintains over 11,000 species of plants and includes a baroque garden, tropical greenhouses, and an orangery.
