About Malmö
Malmö is the third-largest city in Sweden, located in the southern part of the country in Skåne County. With a population of approximately 362,000 inhabitants, it serves as an important commercial hub and cultural center. The city is strategically positioned at the southwestern tip of Sweden, connected to Copenhagen, Denmark, by the Øresund Bridge, which opened in 2000.
The city's most iconic modern landmark is the Turning Torso, completed in 2005. Standing at 190 meters (623 feet), it is Scandinavia's tallest skyscraper and was designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava. This twisted tower has become a symbol of Malmö's transformation from an industrial city to a center of knowledge and sustainability.
Historical architecture plays a significant role in Malmö's cityscape. The Malmö Castle (Malmöhus), dating back to the 1530s, is Scandinavia's oldest preserved Renaissance castle. Today, it houses several museums, including the City Museum, the Natural History Museum, and the Art Museum. The city's main square, Stortorget, features the historic City Hall built in 1546.
Malmö is known for its extensive parks and green spaces, with Folkets Park being Sweden's oldest public park. The city is also recognized for its commitment to sustainability, with numerous environmental initiatives and bicycle-friendly infrastructure. The Western Harbor district (Västra Hamnen) is particularly notable as a sustainable urban development project, showcasing innovative environmental solutions and modern architecture.
