About Gothenburg

Gothenburg is the second-largest city in Sweden and the largest port city in the Nordic countries. Located on the west coast of Sweden, at the mouth of the Göta älv river, it serves as the capital of Västra Götaland County and has a population of approximately 605,000 in the city proper (2023).

Founded in 1621 by King Gustavus Adolphus, the city was designed by Dutch city planners and built by Dutch immigrants. Throughout its history, Gothenburg has played a crucial role in Swedish maritime trade, and industrial development. The city's port remains the largest port in Scandinavia, handling about 30% of Sweden's foreign trade.

Major attractions include Liseberg, Scandinavia's largest amusement park, which welcomes around 3 million visitors annually. The city is also home to the Gothenburg Museum of Art, featuring one of the finest art collections in Northern Europe, and the Universeum, the largest science center in Scandinavia. The historic Fish Church (Feskekörka), an indor fish and seafood market housed in a church-like building from 1874, represents the city's maritime heritage.

Gothenburg is an important educational center, home to the University of Gothenburg and Chalmers University of Technology. The city serves as a major automotive industry hub, with Volvo Cars and Volvo Group headquartered there. The annual Gothenburg Film Festival, established in 1979, is the largest film festival in Scandinavia. The city's extensive public transportation system includes a tram network that is one of the largest in Northern Europe, with about 160 kilometers of double tracks.
