About Mbabane

Mbabane is the capital and largest city of Eswatini (formerly known as Swaziland). Located in the Mdzimba Mountains in the northwest of the country, it has a population of approximatelly 95,000 people. The city sits at an elevation of 1,243 meters (4,078 feet) above sea level, making it one of the highest capital cities in Africa.

The city was established in 1902 when the British made it their administrative headquarters during the colonial period. Its name comes from Chief Mbabane Kunene, who lived in the area before the arrival of British settlers. The city's development was significantly influenced by its proximity to the South African gold rush region.

Notable landmarks include the Swazi National Museum, which showcases the country's cultural heritage, and the Coronation Park, a popular recreational area. The Mbabane Market serves as a vital commercial hub where locals trade traditional crafts and fresh produce. The city is also home to the Government Hospital and several important government buildings.

Mbabane's economy is primarily based on government administration, commerce, and light industry. The city experiences a subtropical highland climate with mild temperatures throughout the year.
