Metrorail Western Cape Map
Description:
This map shows Metrorail Western Cape lines and stations.
Metrorail Western Cape is a commuter rail system operating in the Western Cape province of South Africa. It serves the Cape Town metropolitan area and surrounding regions, functioning as a division of the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA). The network consists of four main corridors: Southern Line, Northern Line, Central Line, and Cape Flats Line.
The system operates approximately 270 kilometers of track and serves 119 stations. Daily ridership peaked at around 676,000 passengers in 2012, making it one of the largest rail systems in South Africa. The network uses 1,067 mm (3 ft 6 in) cape gauge tracks, which is standard for South African railways.
Metrorail Western Cape's rolling stock primarily consists of Electric Multiple Units (EMUs) manufactured by Union Carriage & Wagon. The system operates both older 5M2A series trains and newer 10M series trains. Power is supplied through 3000V DC overhead lines throughout the network.
The rail system faces significant challenges including aging infrastructure, vandalism, and service reliability issues. In recent years, PRASA has implemented various modernization programs to improve service quality and security. The Central Line, which serves some of Cape Town's poorest communities, has experienced particular difficulties with infrastructure theft and illegal settlements along the tracks.
The first railway lines in the region were constructed in the 1860s. The current commuter rail network evolved from these early lines and expanded significantly during the 20th century. Today, Metrorail Western Cape remains a crucial part of Cape Town's public transportation infrastructure, despite its operational challenges.
