The Cape Flats is a large, low-lying area southeast of Cape Town's central business district. This expansive region, often called "die Kaapse Vlakte" in Afrikaans, was formed by the connecting of the Cape Peninsula with the mainland through deposits of sand.
Historically, the area became significantly populated during the apartheid era when non-white residents were forcibly relocated from central Cape Town under the Group Areas Act. Today, it encompasses numerous townships and suburbs including Mitchells Plain, Athlone, and Grassy Park. The region is home to a diverse population, predominantly colored and black communities.
Despite socioeconomic challenges, the Cape Flats has a rich cultural heritage and is known for its vibrant community life. The area includes several notable landmarks such as the Zandvliet Wetlands, Philippi Agricultural Area, and the University of the Western Cape. The region also plays a crucial role in Cape Town's economy, hosting various industrial areas and small businesses.
