About Honiara

Honiara is the capital city of the Solomon Islands, located on the north coast of Guadalcanal Island. With a population of approximately 92,000 people, it is the largest city in the Solomon Islands and serves as the country's primary economic and administrative center.

The city was established as the capital in 1952, replacing Tulagi. Honiara experiences a tropical rainforest climate with consistently high temperatures throughout the year, averaging between 73°F and 89°F (23°C to 32°C). The wet season typically occurs from November to April, with annual rainfall exceeding 86 inches (2,200 mm).

Notable landmarks include the Solomon Islands National Parliament Building, designed to reflect traditional local architecture, and the Central Market, which serves as the city's main marketplace for fresh produce, fish, and handicrafts. The National Museum houses significant cultural artifacts and historical exhibits documenting the nation's history. The US War Memorial and Guadalcanal American Memorial commemorate the World War II Battle of Guadalcanal.

Henderson International Airport, located east of the city center, serves as the country's main gateway. The Point Cruz Harbor functions as the primary seaport, handling most of the country's international trade. Educational institutions include the Solomon Islands National University, established in 2013.

The surrounding hills of Honiara offer hiking opportunities and spectacular views of Iron Bottom Sound, named for the numerous ships sunk during World War II. The Holy Cross Cathedral, built in 1978, stands as one of the city's prominent religious landmarks.
