Political Map of Senegal
Description:
This map shows governmental boundaries of countries, regions and regions capitals, towns, villages, main roads, secondary roads, tracks, railroads and airports in Senegal.
Senegal is divided into 14 administrative regions, each led by a governor appointed by the president. The country shares borders with five nations: Mauritania to the north, Mali to the east, Guinea and Guinea-Bissau to the south, and The Gambia, which forms a narrow enclave along the Gambia River, extending into central Senegal.
The capital and largest city, Dakar, is located on the Cape Verde Peninsula, the westernmost point of Africa. Other major cities include Thiès, Rufisque, and Saint-Louis. The country's regions are further subdivided into 45 departments and 103 arrondissements.
The Casamance region in the south is geographically separated from northern Senegal by The Gambia. This unique geographical feature has historically influenced regional politics and development. Senegal also includes several small offshore islands, including the historically significant Gorée Island near Dakar.
The country maintains its administrative structure from the French colonial period, though it has undergone several reorganizations since independence in 1960.
