About Medina

Medina, officially Al Madinah Al Munawwarah, is the second-holiest city in Islam and is located in the Hejaz region of western Saudi Arabia. With a population of approximately 1.5 million people, it serves as the capital of the Al Madinah Region. The city holds immense religious significance as it was where the Prophet Muhammad migrated to from Mecca in 622 CE, an event known as the Hijra, which marks the beginning of the Islamic calendar.

The heart of Medina is dominated by the Prophet's Mosque (Al-Masjid an-Nabawi), which was originally built by Prophet Muhammad and is now one of the largest mosques in the world. The mosque contains Muhammad's tomb and is visited by millions of Muslims during their pilgrimage. The central area surrounding the mosque, known as Al-Haram (the Sacred Area), is restricted to Muslims only.

Other significant religious sites include Mount Uhud, the site of the Battle of Uhud, and Quba Mosque, the first mosque built in Islamic history. The city also features the Al-Baqi' Cemetery, where many of Prophet Muhammad's companions and family members are buried.

Medina's economy is primarily driven by religious tourism, particularly during the Hajj and Umrah seasons. The city has experienced significant modernization in recent decades, with the development of modern infrastructure, including the Prince Mohammad Bin Abdulaziz International Airport and the Haramain High-Speed Railway connecting it to Mecca.

The climate of Medina is characterized by extremely hot summers and mild winters. The city lies at an elevation of about 620 meters (2,030 feet) above sea level and is surrounded by hills and rich agricultural lands known for growing dates. The famous Seven Mosques historical site and the Trenches of Khandaq, associated with the Battle of the Trench, are other notable landmarks that attract visitors to the city.

Prophet's Mosque Map

The Prophet's Mosque (Al-Masjid an-Nabawi) is the second-holiest site in Islam, located in Medina, Saudi Arabia. Originally built by Prophet Muhammad in 622 CE after his migration from Mecca, the mosque has undergone numerous expansions throughout history, with major renovations carried out by various Islamic caliphs and Saudi kings.

The mosque's current structure covers an area of 98,326 square meters (1,058,370 square feet) and can accommodate more than one million worshippers. The building features 10 minarets, each standing 104 meters (341 feet) high, and is topped by 27 sliding domes. A distinctive feature of the mosque is the Green Dome, built in 1279 CE and painted green in 1837, which sits above the tomb of Prophet Muhammad and his two closest companions, Abu Bakr and Umar.

The mosque complex includes several historically significant areas, including the Rawdah (also known as Riyadh ul-Jannah), considered to be a part of Paradise according to Islamic tradition. The building is equipped with modern amenities including air conditioning, escalators, and advanced sound systems. The courtyard features specially designed umbrellas that automatically open during daylight hours to protect worshippers from the intense Saudi heat.

The Prophet's Mosque operates 24 hours a day and experiences its highest visitor numbers during Ramadan and the Hajj season. The Saudi government provides free services to visitors, including water, air conditioning, and wheelchair assistance. Photography inside the mosque is restricted, and access to certain areas is limited to Muslims only.
