About São Tomé

São Tomé is the capital and largest city of São Tomé and Príncipe, located on the northeastern coast of São Tomé Island. The city serves as the main economic and administrative center of the country with a population of approximately 75,000 inhabitants, which represents about 40% of the nation's total population.

The city was founded by Portuguese colonizers in the 1480s and developed around Fort São Sebastião, which was built to protect the natural harbor. The fort, constructed in 1575, remains one of the city's most significant historical landmarks. During the colonial period, São Tomé became an important port for the slave trade and later for coffee and cocoa exports.

The city's architecture reflects its Portuguese colonial heritage, with notable structures including the São Tomé National Museum, housed in the former Fort São Sebastião, and the Presidential Palace, which was originally the governor's residence during colonial times. The Nossa Senhora da Graça Cathedral, built in the 16th century, stands as the main religious edifice in the city and represents a prime example of Portuguese colonial religious architecture.

As the nation's primary port, São Tomé handles most of the country's imports and exports, particularly cocoa, which remains a significant export commodity. The city is served by São Tomé International Airport, providing connections to various African destinations and Europe. The local economy is primarily based on government services, commerce, and small-scale fishing.

The city features a tropical climate with average temperatures ranging between 75°F and 85°F throughout the year. The main market, Mercado Municipal, serves as a central point for local commerce and cultural exchange, where vendors sell fresh produce, fish, and traditional crafts. The waterfront area, known as the Marginal, is a popular gathering place for locals and visitors, offering views of the Gulf of Guinea and serving as a hub for cultural events and celebrations.
