About Sao Tome and Principe
São Tomé and Príncipe is an African island nation located in the Gulf of Guinea, off the western equatorial coast of Central Africa. The country consists of two main islands: São Tomé and Príncipe, which lie approximately 150 kilometers apart. The total land area encompasses 964 square kilometers (372 square miles).
The nation has a population of 220,372 (2023 estimate), making it the second-smallest African country by population. São Tomé, the capital city, serves as the country's primary economic and administrative center, housing approximately 75,000 inhabitants.
The country maintains a service-based economy, with agriculture and tourism as key sectors. Cocoa production dominates agricultural exports, accounting for roughly 90% of total exports. Other significant crops include coffee, palm oil, and coconuts. The fishing industry also contributes substantially to the local economy.
The archipelago's volcanic origin has created distinctive topographical features, including Pico de São Tomé, which rises to 2,024 meters (6,640 feet) above sea level. The climate is tropical, characterized by a hot and humid atmosphere with average temperatures ranging between 22°C and 31°C (72°F to 88°F).
Tourism continues to develop as a vital economic sector. The islands offer diverse attractions, including pristine beaches, colonial Portuguese architecture, and extensive biodiversity. Obo National Park, covering approximately one-third of São Tomé Island, provides opportunities for hiking and wildlife observation. The park contains numerous endemic plant and bird species.
The country's infrastructure includes an international airport on São Tomé Island and a deep-water port in the capital. The official language is Portuguese, though many residents also speak local creole dialects. The currency is the São Tomé and Príncipe dobra (STD).
