About City of San Marino

City of San Marino is the capital city of the Republic of San Marino, one of the world's smallest and oldest sovereign states. Located on the western slopes of Monte Titano, it is situated at an elevation of 2,457 feet (749 meters) above sea level.

The city, which serves as the primary urban center of the microstate, has a population of approximately 4,100 residents. It is one of the nine municipalities (castelli) that make up the Republic of San Marino and covers an area of about 2.5 square miles (7.09 square kilometers).

The historic center of City of San Marino features several significant landmarks, with the most prominent being the Three Towers of San Marino. These medieval fortifications, namely Guaita (First Tower), Cesta (Second Tower), and Montale (Third Tower), have become symbols of the republic's freedom and sovereignty. The Guaita, dating back to the 11th century, is the oldest and most famous of the three.

The city's architectural heritage includes the Palazzo Pubblico (Public Palace), which serves as the seat of government. Built in the neo-Gothic style in the late 19th century, it houses the main governmental institutions, including the Grand and General Council. The Basilica di San Marino, constructed in the neoclassical style during the 19th century, stands as the main religious building in the city and contains the relics of Saint Marinus, the founder of the republic.

Tourism plays a crucial role in the city's economy, with millions of visitors annually exploring its medieval architecture, museums, and duty-free shops. The State Museum of San Marino and the Museum of Ancient Arms showcase the republic's history and cultural heritage.

The city maintains a well-preserved medieval urban layout with narrow streets, historic buildings, and fortified walls. The Piazza della Libertà (Liberty Square) serves as the main public square and features the Statue of Liberty. A unique tradition includes the Changing of the Guard ceremony, performed by the Guards of the Rock in their distinctive uniforms.

In 2008, the historic center of City of San Marino, along with Mount Titano, was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognizing its historical significance and exceptional universal value. The city continues to serve as both the political and cultural heart of the Republic of San Marino while preserving its medieval character and traditions.
