About Saint Martin - Sint Maarten
Saint Martin (French: Saint-Martin; Dutch: Sint Maarten) is a Caribbean island divided between France and the Netherlands. The island lies approximately 190 miles (305 kilometers) east of Puerto Rico and covers a total area of 37 square miles (96 square kilometers).
The northern French territory, called Saint-Martin, occupies 20 square miles (53 square kilometers) with Marigot as its capital. The southern Dutch territory, Sint Maarten, comprises 14 square miles (37 square kilometers) with Philipsburg as its capital. The total population of the island reaches approximately 76,000 inhabitants, with the French side housing 34,000 residents and the Dutch side accommodating 42,000.
The economy primarily relies on tourism, which generates the majority of the island's revenue. Both sides maintain duty-free shopping districts, with Philipsburg and Marigot featuring numerous boutiques, jewelry stores, and luxury goods retailers. The island uses both the euro (French side) and the Netherlands Antillean guilder (Dutch side), though the US dollar circulates widely throughout the territory.
Saint Martin boasts 37 beaches, including the renowned Orient Bay Beach and Maho Beach, famous for its proximity to Princess Juliana International Airport where aircraft fly extremely low over beachgoers during landing approaches. The island's main tourist attractions include Fort Louis on the French side, built in 1789, the Sint Maarten Museum in Philipsburg, and numerous water sports activities along its coastline.
The island maintains a tropical climate with average temperatures ranging between 77°F and 86°F (25°C to 30°C) year-round. The primary languages spoken include French and Dutch (official languages), English, and Creole. The island's infrastructure includes the Princess Juliana International Airport on the Dutch side and the smaller L'Espérance Airport on the French territory.
