About Edinburgh of the Seven Seas

Edinburgh of the Seven Seas is the main settlement and capital of Tristan da Cunha, a remote group of islands in the South Atlantic Ocean. It is considered the most remote permanent settlement on Earth, located 1,510 miles (2,430 km) from Saint Helena and 1,750 miles (2,816 km) from South Africa. The settlement is situated on the north coast of the main island and has a population of approximately 250 residents.

The settlement was founded in 1816 when the British annexed the islands after the fall of Napoleon. It was named after Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, who visited the island in 1867 while commanding the HMS Galatea. The "Seven Seas" portion of the name refers to the seven oceans of the world, highlighting the settlement's isolated maritime location. Locally, residents simply call it "The Settlement," avoiding the formal name in everyday conversation.

Edinburgh of the Seven Seas experienced a significant disruption in 1961 when a volcanic eruption forced the entire population to evacuate to England. The residents returned in 1963 after scientific surveys determined it was safe to reoccupy the island. Today, the settlement functions as a tight-knit community where most of the island's economic activity takes place. The primary industries include fishing (particularly for Tristan rock lobster), agriculture, and the sale of postage stamps to collectors worldwide.

Notable landmarks include St. Mary's Anglican Church, the Tristan Island Store, a small hospital, and the Albatross Bar, which serves as the community's social hub. The settlement also features a museum that documents the island's history and natural environment. Most buildings are simple structures designed to withstand the harsh South Atlantic weather conditions, with many constructed from volcanic stone.

Access to Edinburgh of the Seven Seas is extremely limited, with no airstrip on the island. Visitors can only arrive by boat, typically on fishing vessels or occasional cruise ships that anchor offshore. The harbor, known as Calshot Harbour, was completed in 1967 and provides essential access for supplies and connection to the outside world.
