About Tristan da Cunha

Tristan da Cunha is a remote group of volcanic islands in the south Atlantic Ocean and the most isolated inhabited archipelago in the world. It is part of the British Overseas Territory of Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha. The main island, also called Tristan da Cunha, has an area of 98 square kilometers (38 square miles) and is roughly circular in shape. It is located 2,816 kilometers (1,750 miles) from South Africa and 3,360 kilometers (2,088 miles) from South America.

The archipelago consists of the main island of Tristan da Cunha and several uninhabited islands: Inaccessible Island, Nightingale Islands, Middle Island, Stoltenhoff Island, and Gough Island. The islands were first discovered in 1506 by Portuguese explorer Tristão da Cunha, after whom they are named. However, they remained uninhabited until the early 19th century.

The only settlement on the island is Edinburgh of the Seven Seas, often referred to as "The Settlement" by the approximately 250 residents who live there. All the inhabitants are British citizens, and most are descendants of the original settlers who arrived in the early 1800s. The community is highly self-sufficient, with an economy based primarily on subsistence farming and fishing. The island's commercial fishing industry, centered on the Tristan rock lobster, provides the main source of foreign income.

The climate of Tristan da Cunha is classified as oceanic, with mild temperatures ranging from 11°C to 17°C (52°F to 63°F) and high precipitation throughout the year. The island's location in the "Roaring Forties" means it experiences consistent strong westerly winds.

The most notable geographical feature is Queen Mary's Peak, an active volcano with a summit elevation of 2,062 meters (6,765 feet). Its last major eruption occurred in 1961, which forced the evacuation of the entire population to England. Most islanders returned in 1963 after the eruption subsided.

The islands are home to significant biodiversity and are recognized for their importance to seabird conservation. Inaccessible Island was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995, later extended to include Gough Island. These islands serve as breeding grounds for numerous species of albatrosses, petrels, and penguins, including several endangered species. The Tristan albatross and the Inaccessible Island rail, the world's smallest flightless bird, are endemic to the archipelago.

Access to Tristan da Cunha is challenging as there is no airport. The island can only be reached by sea, with irregular visits from fishing vessels and the occasional supply ship from Cape Town, a journey that typically takes about six days.
