About Jamestown
Jamestown is the capital and only city of Saint Helena, a British Overseas Territory located in the South Atlantic Ocean. Founded in 1659 by the English East India Company, it is named after James, Duke of York (later King James II). The city is situated in James Valley on the northwestern coast of the island and serves as Saint Helena's main port, commercial center, and seat of government.

With a population of approximately 630 residents (as of 2016), Jamestown is one of the smallest capital cities in the world. The settlement is characterized by its colonial architecture and narrow streets, with buildings constructed primarily from local volcanic rock. The city's layout follows the contours of the steep-sided valley in which it is built, with a single main street running from the seafront up through the settlement. Due to its unique historical significance and well-preserved Georgian-era buildings, Jamestown has been proposed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Notable landmarks include Jacob's Ladder, a famous staircase of 699 steps built in 1829 as an inclined plane to transport goods between Jamestown and Ladder Hill Fort above. The Castle serves as the seat of government and houses the Governor's office. St. James' Church, dating from 1774, is the oldest Anglican church in the Southern Hemisphere. The Museum of Saint Helena offers exhibits on the island's history, including its most famous resident, Napoleon Bonaparte, who was exiled to the island from 1815 until his death in 1821.
Jamestown's harbor played a significant role in maritime history, particularly during the age of sail when Saint Helena served as a vital resupplying station for ships traveling between Europe and Asia. The East India Company used the port extensively, and later it became an important coaling station for the Royal Navy. Today, the harbor continues to be essential for the island, as most supplies arrive by sea.
The climate in Jamestown is notably warmer and drier than the rest of Saint Helena due to its low elevation and sheltered position. While much of the island experiences mild, temperate conditions, Jamestown can be quite hot, especially during the summer months (December to March). Since 2017, Jamestown has been connected to the outside world via Saint Helena Airport, though the city itself remains accessible primarily by road from the airport, which is located on a different part of the island.
