About Kigali

Kigali is the capital and largest city of Rwanda, located in the geographical center of the country. Established in 1907, the city has grown from a small colonial outpost to become Rwanda's major economic, cultural, and transport hub. The city's population is approximately 1.75 million people (2022 census).

Situated in the mountainous region of central Rwanda, Kigali spreads across numerous hills at elevations ranging from 1,433 to 1,645 meters (4,701 to 5,397 feet) above sea level. The city experiences a temperate tropical highland climate with average temperatures around 20°C (68°F) throughout the year.

Notable landmarks include the Kigali Genocide Memorial, which serves as a memorial to the 1994 Rwandan genocide and is an important historical site. The Presidential Palace Museum, formerly the residence of President Juvénal Habyarimana, offers insights into Rwanda's political history. The modern Kigali Convention Centre, with its distinctive dome-shaped architecture, has become an iconic symbol of the city's development.

The city is divided into three districts: Nyarugenge, Gasabo, and Kicukiro. The central business district is located in Nyarugenge, where most government offices, financial institutions, and commercial activities are concentrated. Kigali International Airport serves as the country's main gateway for international travelers.

Known for its cleanliness and organization, Kigali has implemented strict environmental policies, including a ban on plastic bags since 2008. The city has received international recognition for its urban development initiatives and is often cited as one of the cleanest cities in Africa. Regular umuganda (community work) sessions, where residents participate in cleaning and improvement projects, contribute to maintaining the city's pristine condition.
