About Bucharest Metro
The Bucharest Metro (Romanian: Metroul București) is a rapid transit system serving Bucharest, Romania's capital city. Operated by Metrorex, it began operations in 1979 with the inaugural line connecting Semănătoarea (now Petrache Poenaru) and Timpuri Noi stations.
Currently, the system consists of 5 lines (M1, M2, M3, M4, and M5), spanning 49.8 miles (80.1 kilometers) with 64 stations. The metro network serves approximately 600,000 passengers daily, making it one of the most crucial transportation systems in Bucharest. The trains operate from 5:00 AM to 11:00 PM, with intervals ranging from 2 to 12 minutes depending on the time of day.
The most recent expansion of the system occurred in September 2020 with the opening of Line M5, connecting Râul Doamnei to Eroilor. This addition marked a significant milestone in the network's development, serving the densely populated Drumul Taberei district.
Bucharest Metro uses both old Romanian-built trains and modern Bombardier Transportation vehicles. The system features standard gauge tracks (1,435 mm) and operates on a 750 V DC third rail power supply. Most stations are equipped with escalators and elevators to ensure accessibility for all passengers.
Future expansion plans include extending Line M4 northward to Străulești depot and constructing Line M6, which will connect Bucharest's Henri Coandă International Airport to the city center. The metro system operates independently from the city's surface public transport network, though they share an integrated ticketing system.
