About Toruń

Toruń is a historical city located in northern Poland, situated on the Vistula River. Founded in 1233 by the Teutonic Knights, it serves as one of the oldest cities in Poland. The city is particularly notable as the birthplace of astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus in 1473.

The medieval part of Toruń has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1997. The city's most remarkable architectural landmarks include the Old Town Hall, built in the 13th century and expanded in the 14th century, which now houses the Regional Museum. The Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, constructed between 1343 and 1502, stands as one of the finest examples of Brick Gothic architecture in Poland. The House of Nicolaus Copernicus, where the famous astronomer was born, has been transformed into a museum dedicated to his life and work.

The city is renowned for its gingerbread (pierniki), a tradition dating back to the 13th century. The Museum of Toruń Gingerbread, located in the former Weese gingerbread factory, offers visitors insights into this centuries-old craft. Modern Toruń is also an important academic center, home to Nicolaus Copernicus University, established in 1945, which enrolls approximately 30,000 students.

Among the city's other significant attractions are the Leaning Tower, a medieval defensive tower that has developed a noticeable tilt, and the ruins of the Teutonic Castle, which was partially destroyed by townspeople in 1454. The city's defensive walls, built in the 13th century and extended in later periods, remain among the most complete medieval fortifications in Poland. The Philadelphia Boulevard along the Vistula River provides a picturesque promenade with views of the historic cityscape. The city maintains its medieval street layout in the Old Town, featuring numerous Gothic townhouses and granaries that reflect its prosperous Hanseatic past.
