About Poznań
Poznań is a major city located in west-central Poland and serves as the capital of the Greater Poland Voivodeship. With a population of approximately 540,000 residents (2023), it's the fifth-largest city in Poland. The city is situated on the Warta River and has a history spanning over a thousand years, making it one of Poland's oldest cities.
The city's origins can be traced back to the 8th century when a fortress was built on what is now Ostrów Tumski (Cathedral Island). Poznań played a crucial role in the formation of the Polish state, serving as one of the first capitals of Poland and the seat of Poland's first rulers. The city received its city rights in 1253 and developed into an important center of trade during the Middle Ages, particularly due to its location on major trade routes between Western and Eastern Europe.
Modern Poznań is a significant economic, academic, and cultural hub. The city hosts the Poznań International Fair, one of the largest trade fair centers in Central Europe. The city is home to numerous higher education institutions, including Adam Mickiewicz University, which is one of Poland's top universities. Poznań's economy is diverse, with strong sectors in industry, services, and technology, making it one of Poland's largest business centers.

The city's architectural landmarks reflect its rich history. The Renaissance Town Hall in the Old Market Square is one of Poland's finest examples of Renaissance architecture, famous for its mechanical goats that butt heads at noon each day. The Imperial Castle, built in the early 20th century, is the youngest monarchical residence in Europe. The Parish Church of St. Stanislaus (Fara Church) is considered one of the finest examples of Baroque architecture in Poland.
Transportation infrastructure in Poznań is well-developed, with Poznań-Ławica Airport serving international flights, and the city being an important railway hub connecting major Polish and European cities. The local public transportation system includes an extensive network of trams and buses. Poznań is also known for its green spaces, including the Citadel Park, the city's largest park built on the site of former fortifications, and Malta Lake, an artificial lake that hosts various sporting events and recreational activities.
