Cities of Norway

Norway has numerous cities spread across its diverse landscape, with Oslo being the capital and largest city. As of 2023, approximately 83% of Norway's population lives in urban areas.

The most populous cities include Oslo, Bergen, Trondheim, Stavanger, and Drammen. Oslo, located in the southeastern part of the country, serves as Norway's economic and governmental center, with a population of approximately 693,000 in the city proper. Bergen, the second-largest city, is situated on the western coast and has historically been an important trading port, known for its UNESCO-listed Bryggen wharf.

Trondheim, founded in 997 AD, is Norway's third-largest city and was the nation's first capital. It remains an important educational center, home to the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). Stavanger, located on the southwestern coast, has transformed from a fishing town into Norway's oil industry hub since the 1970s.

Tromsø, often called the "Gateway to the Arctic," is located 217 miles north of the Arctic Circle. It's famous for being one of the best places to view the Northern Lights and experience the midnight sun. Ålesund is renowned for its Art Nouveau architecture, rebuilt after a devastating fire in 1904, and is considered one of Norway's most beautiful cities, surrounded by fjords and mountains.

Norwegian cities are characterized by their integration with nature, extensive public transportation systems, and high standards of living. Many urban areas feature a mix of modern architecture and preserved historical buildings. The municipalities (kommuner) govern these cities under a system of local self-government, managing public services and urban development according to national guidelines.
