About Kingston
Kingston is the administrative center and historical heart of Norfolk Island, located on the southern coast of the island. The settlement was established in 1788 during the First Fleet period and served as a penal colony under both British and Australian administration. Today, Kingston and Arthur's Vale Historic Area (KAVHA) is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, representing one of the most well-preserved convict settlements in the Pacific region.
The town features numerous significant historical structures, including Government House, built in 1829 and still serving as the official residence of the Administrator of Norfolk Island. The Old Military Barracks, constructed in 1829, houses the island's legislative assembly and administrative offices. Kingston's architectural heritage also includes the ruins of the New Gaol, the Commissariat Store, and the iconic Kingston Pier, which remains the island's primary landing place for small vessels.
One of Kingston's most notable landmarks is the Cemetery, containing graves dating back to the First Settlement period (1788-1814). The town is also home to the Norfolk Island Museum, which showcases artifacts and exhibits from both the penal settlement era and Pitcairn Islander heritage. The Quality Row, a street of restored Georgian buildings, represents the best-preserved collection of early colonial architecture in the South Pacific.
Kingston's waterfront area includes Emily Bay and Slaughter Bay, which provide protected swimming areas within the Kingston and Arthur's Vale Historic Area. The town's historical significance and well-preserved colonial architecture make it a crucial tourist destination and an important center for understanding Norfolk Island's complex history.
