About Marrakesh

Marrakesh (also spelled Marrakech) is a major city in Morocco, located in the foothills of the Atlas Mountains. It serves as the capital of the Marrakesh-Safi region and has a population of approximately 1,014,813 residents (as of 2024). Founded in 1070 by the Almoravid dynasty, Marrakesh has historically been a crucial economic center and remains one of Morocco's four imperial cities.

The city is divided into two distinct parts: the historical city (Medina) and the modern European district (Gueliz). The Medina of Marrakesh, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1985, is characterized by its ancient red walls and numerous marketplaces. The most famous among these is Jemaa el-Fnaa, the main square and marketplace, which comes alive at night with storytellers, musicians, and food vendors. The square represents one of the busiest and most famous public spaces in Africa and the Arab World.

Marrakesh's economy is primarily based on tourism, trade, and handicrafts. The city's souks (traditional markets) are among the largest in Morocco, offering everything from traditional crafts and textiles to modern goods. Agriculture also plays a significant role, with the surrounding Haouz plain producing citrus fruits, vegetables, and olives. The city has also developed a modern industrial sector, including food processing, construction materials, and textile manufacturing.

The climate is semi-arid, with hot, dry summers and mild winters. Average temperatures range from 54°F (12°C) in winter to 100°F (38°C) in summer. The city receives approximately 11.5 inches (292 mm) of rainfall annually, mostly between November and April. The combination of its climate, historical significance, and cultural attractions has made Marrakesh one of Morocco's most popular tourist destinations, receiving over two million visitors annually. The city's international airport, Marrakesh Menara Airport, serves as a major gateway for tourists and has contributed significantly to the city's growth as a tourist destination.
