About Podgorica

Podgorica is the capital and largest city of Montenegro, serving as the country's administrative, economic, and cultural center. Located at the confluence of the Ribnica and Morača rivers, the city lies in a valley surrounded by the Dinaric Alps. With a population of approximately 172,139 (2023 census), it represents about 30% of Montenegro's total population.

The history of Podgorica spans over two millennia. The area was first settled during Roman times when it was known as Birziminium. Throughout its history, the city has been ruled by various empires and powers, including the Romans, Slavs, Ottomans, and Austro-Hungarians. The city's modern name "Podgorica" was first mentioned in 1326 in official documents of the Serbian state. From 1946 to 1992, during the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia period, the city was named Titograd in honor of Yugoslav leader Josip Broz Tito.

The city features several notable landmarks and cultural institutions. The most prominent historical site is Stara Varoš (Old Town), which represents the Ottoman-era heritage with its narrow streets and traditional architecture. The Clock Tower (Sahat Kula), built in the 18th century, stands as a symbol of this historic district. The Millennium Bridge, a modern cable-stayed bridge spanning the Morača River, has become an iconic symbol of contemporary Podgorica since its completion in 2005. The Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ, completed in 2013, represents one of the largest Orthodox churches in the Balkans and showcases impressive contemporary religious architecture.
