About Kotor
Kotor is a coastal city in Montenegro, located in a secluded part of the Gulf of Kotor. The city has a population of approximately 13,347 inhabitants and serves as the administrative center of Kotor Municipality. Situated between imposing limestone mountains and the Adriatic Sea, Kotor is one of the most historically significant places in Montenegro, with its Old Town being a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1979.

The history of Kotor dates back to ancient times, with the first settlements appearing during the 3rd century BC. Throughout its history, the city has been under the rule of various empires and states, including the Romans, Byzantines, Venetians, Austrians, and French. The Venetian period (1420-1797) particularly influenced the city's architecture and cultural heritage, which is still evident in the preserved medieval architecture and numerous historic buildings.

The city's most prominent landmark is the Old Town of Kotor, a well-preserved urbanized area surrounded by an impressive 4.5-kilometer long fortification system. The walls, reaching heights of up to 20 meters and widths of 16 meters in some sections, were built gradually between the 9th and 19th centuries. Within the Old Town, visitors can find significant religious buildings such as the Cathedral of Saint Tryphon (built in 1166), Saint Luke's Church (1195), and the Church of Saint Nicholas.

Another notable feature is the Castle of San Giovanni (also known as St. John's Fortress), which sits at an elevation of 280 meters above sea level. The fortress can be reached by climbing 1,350 stairs, offering panoramic views of the bay and surrounding mountains. The Maritime Museum of Montenegro, housed in a baroque palace in the Old Town, showcases the region's rich maritime history through various artifacts and exhibits.

Kotor's economy primarily relies on tourism, with the city being a popular destination for cruise ships in the Adriatic Sea. The natural beauty of the Bay of Kotor, combined with its historical significance and well-preserved medieval architecture, attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors annually. The city also benefits from its strategic position as a significant seaport and its proximity to other tourist destinations in Montenegro.
