The settlement was founded by ancient Greeks in the 5th century BC. Over the centuries, Budva has been ruled by various civilizations, including the Romans, Venetians, and Austro-Hungarians. A significant moment in its recent history was the 1979 earthquake, which caused extensive damage to the city but led to careful restoration efforts that preserved its historical character.

The city's most prominent feature is the Old Town (Stari Grad), a well-preserved medieval fortress surrounded by Venetian walls. Within the Old Town, visitors can find several historical religious buildings, including the Church of Santa Maria in Punta from 840, the Church of St. Ivan from the 7th century, and the Church of the Holy Trinity built in 1804. The narrow streets and squares of the Old Town showcase the architectural influence of various historical periods.

Budva's coastline, known as the Budva Riviera, extends for 21 kilometers and includes 17 beaches. The most notable beaches are Mogren Beach, Slovenska Plaza, and Jaz Beach, which has hosted major music festivals. The city's economy is primarily driven by tourism, attracting over 750,000 visitors annually. The Mediterranean climate, with average summer temperatures around 25°C (77°F), makes it an ideal destination for beach tourism from May to October. Modern Budva has expanded beyond its historical center to include new hotels, residential areas, and a marina that accommodates both fishing boats and luxury yachts, while maintaining its cultural heritage through various events and festivals throughout the year.
