About Skopje
Skopje, the capital of Northern Macedonia, is located in the northern part of the country along the Vardar River. As the largest city, it serves as the political, economic, and cultural center of Northern Macedonia. Skopje's strategic location has historically made it a crossroads for trade and cultural exchange in the Balkans.
The city is characterized by a mix of architectural styles reflecting various historical influences. Highlights include the Stone Bridge, the symbol of Skopje, connecting the old and new parts of the city, and the Skopje Fortress, with its panoramic views and historical significance. The Old Bazaar, one of the largest in the Balkans, displays Ottoman-era architecture and serves as a lively shopping center.
After the devastating earthquake of 1963, Skopje underwent significant reconstruction, leading to modern urban planning and development. The recent Skopje 2014 project saw the addition of numerous statues and neoclassical buildings to enhance the city's aesthetic appeal. Skopje is also home to several educational and cultural institutions, including the University of St. Cyril and Methodius, which contributes to its role as an academic center. The city's infrastructure supports its status as a key regional center by continuously improving transportation and public services.
