About Kassandra
Kassandra, also known as Pallene in ancient times, is the westernmost of the three peninsulas extending from Halkidiki. The peninsula measures approximately 50 kilometers in length and 15 kilometers at its widest point, separated from mainland Halkidiki by the Potidea Canal, which was constructed in 1935.
The main town of Kassandra is Kassandreia, founded in 316 BCE by Cassander, king of Macedon, though the largest settlement today is Nea Moudania, located at the peninsula's base with a population exceeding 6,000 residents. Nea Moudania serves as the commercial center and main transportation hub for the peninsula.
Kassandra is the most developed peninsula in terms of tourism infrastructure, featuring numerous resorts, hotels, and organized beaches. Major tourist centers include Kallithea, known for its vibrant nightlife and the Temple of Ammon Zeus ruins; Pefkohori, a popular family resort; Hanioti, offering extensive beach facilities; and Afytos, a traditional stone-built village perched on a cliff overlooking the sea. The village of Sani hosts the Sani Festival, an annual cultural event featuring international music performances.
Archaeological sites on the peninsula include the ancient city of Mendi, famous in antiquity for its wine production, and Neapolis, located near modern Nea Fokea. The Byzantine Tower of Nea Fokea, dating from the 15th century, stands as a well-preserved example of Byzantine defensive architecture.
The peninsula's economy is predominantly based on tourism, with the summer season attracting visitors primarily from Greece and other European countries. Agricultural production includes olives, honey, and wine. The landscape consists of rolling hills, pine forests, and approximately 70 kilometers of coastline featuring sandy beaches. The highest point on Kassandra reaches 353 meters above sea level.
