About Skiathos

Skiathos is the westernmost island of the Sporades group, located in the northwest Aegean Sea. The island covers 19 square miles and has a permanent population of approximately 6,000 residents, though this number increases significantly during summer. Skiathos Town, the capital and only settlement of significant size, is situated on the southeast coast around a natural harbor protected by the Bourtzi, a small fortified islet that once served as a fortress and is now connected to the shore.

The town features red-tiled roofs contrasting with typical Cycladic architecture, reflecting the island's Venetian influences. The picturesque waterfront, lined with cafes, restaurants, and shops, curves around the harbor. Despite tourism development, the old town preserves narrow cobblestone streets and traditional houses. The ruins of Kastro, the medieval capital located on a rocky promontory on the north coast, were inhabited from the 14th to 19th centuries as protection against pirates. The site contains ruined churches and houses, with four restored churches remaining from the original 22.

Skiathos is famous for its beaches, claiming over 60 around its coastline, mostly concentrated on the south coast. Koukounaries Beach in the southwest, with fine golden sand backed by an aromatic pine forest (a protected area), is considered one of Greece's finest beaches. Other popular beaches include Lalaria on the north coast, accessible only by boat and featuring white pebbles and dramatic rock formations. The island is densely forested with Aleppo pines covering much of the terrain. The House of Alexandros Papadiamantis, the island's most famous native son and one of Greece's greatest writers, operates as a museum in Skiathos Town.

Skiathos Airport, despite its short runway that requires skilled piloting, provides connections to Athens and direct international flights during summer, contributing to the island's popularity. The island gained additional fame as a filming location for the movie "Mamma Mia!" (2008). The economy is heavily dependent on tourism, with the island experiencing a dramatic seasonal variation in population and activity. Ferry connections link Skiathos to other Sporades islands, Volos, and Thessaloniki.
