About Samothraki
Samothraki (or Samothrace) is an island in the northern Aegean Sea, located south of the Evros Delta and opposite the Greek-Turkish land border. The island covers 69 square miles and has a permanent population of approximately 2,900 residents. The main settlements are Kamariotissa, the port on the northwest coast, and Chora, the capital built on a hillside inland.
The island is famous for the Winged Victory of Samothrace (Nike of Samothrace), a Hellenistic sculpture dating to approximately 200 BCE, discovered on the island in 1863 and now displayed in the Louvre Museum in Paris. The statue was found near the Sanctuary of the Great Gods, an ancient religious site where mystery rites dedicated to the Great Gods were performed, attracting pilgrims from throughout the ancient world. The sanctuary ruins include temples, a theater, and other structures, with the site museum displaying artifacts.
Mount Saos (Fengari), rising to 5,285 feet, is the highest mountain in the Aegean islands. According to legend, Poseidon watched the Trojan War from its summit. The mountain dominates the island's landscape, covered with forests and creating numerous waterfalls, particularly the Fonias (Murderer) Waterfalls and pools known as Vathres, popular swimming spots. Therma on the south coast features hot springs and pebble beaches. Samothraki remains relatively undeveloped for tourism, maintaining a wild, natural character. Access is by ferry from Alexandroupoli on the mainland, with connections limited in winter.
