About Lefkada
Lefkada (also spelled Leucas or Lefkas) is an Ionian island connected to mainland Greece by a long causeway and a floating bridge spanning a narrow channel. The island covers 129 square miles and has a population of approximately 22,000 residents. Lefkada Town, the capital, is located on the northern part of the island near the causeway and features distinctive architecture with brightly colored upper stories on wooden frames, designed as an earthquake-resistant measure.
Agia Mavra fortress, a 14th-century Venetian castle, guards the entrance to the island at the beginning of the causeway. The west coast features some of Greece's most spectacular beaches, including Porto Katsiki and Egremni, with white cliffs and turquoise waters. The east coast, facing the mainland, has calmer waters and traditional villages such as Nydri, a popular sailing base, and Vassiliki, known for windsurfing.
The small satellite islands of Meganisi, Kalamos, Kastos, and Skorpios (formerly owned by the Onassis family) lie off Lefkada's east coast. The island's interior is mountainous and green, with traditional mountain villages like Karya, known for lace-making. Lefkada's accessibility via bridge makes it unique among Greek islands, allowing direct road access from Athens and other parts of Greece.
