About Koufonisia

Koufonisia are a group of two main small islands in the southeastern Cyclades between Naxos and Amorgos. The inhabited island, Ano Koufonisi (Upper Koufonisi), covers just 10 square miles and has a permanent population of approximately 400 residents. The settlement, located near the port, features Cycladic architecture with white houses and narrow alleyways.

Kato Koufonisi (Lower Koufonisi), the larger uninhabited island, is separated by a narrow strait and contains a few seasonal residences and tavernas, accessible by small boat. The islands remained relatively unknown to tourism until recent decades but have experienced significant development due to their beaches and crystal-clear waters. Ano Koufonisi features numerous sandy beaches, particularly along the south coast, including Finikas, Fanos, and Pori, accessible by walking paths.

The island's small size allows visitors to explore on foot. The economy, traditionally based on fishing, now relies primarily on summer tourism. Despite development, Koufonisia maintains a low-key atmosphere compared to more famous Cycladic islands. The islands are accessible by ferry from Naxos, Amorgos, and Piraeus, though connections can be limited outside peak season. The Koufonisia complex also includes several smaller, uninhabited islets.
