About Ios

Ios is an island in the southern Cyclades, located between Naxos and Santorini. The island covers 42 square miles and has a permanent population of approximately 2,000 residents. The port of Gialos (or Ormos) is connected by a winding road to Chora, the capital, which sits on a hill overlooking the harbor. Chora features typical Cycladic architecture with white cubical houses, windmills, and numerous churches.

Ios has traditionally been associated with Homer, with ancient sources claiming the poet died and was buried on the island. A site traditionally identified as Homer's Tomb is located in the northern part of the island near Plakotos. The Paleokastro, an ancient fortified settlement on the northern coast, contains remains dating from the Early Bronze Age through the Byzantine period and offers panoramic views of the Aegean.

During the 1970s through the 1990s, Ios developed a reputation as a party destination popular with young international tourists. While this nightlife culture remains centered around Chora's main square and continues during summer months, the island has diversified its tourism offerings. Mylopotas Beach, the island's main beach located near the port, stretches for nearly a mile and offers water sports. The north of the island, including Manganari Bay with its multiple beaches, remains quieter. The eastern part of the island is largely undeveloped and accessible mainly by hiking trails.
