About Ionian Islands
Ionian Islands are a chain of seven larger islands and numerous smaller ones located in the Ionian Sea off the western coast of Greece. The main islands, known as the Heptanese (meaning "seven islands"), include Corfu, Kefalonia, Zakynthos, Lefkada, Ithaca, Paxos, and Kythira (though Kythira is geographically separated from the others). The islands stretch from the Albanian border in the north to the southern Peloponnese.
Unlike most of Greece, the Ionian Islands were never under Ottoman rule. Instead, they experienced Venetian domination for several centuries, followed by brief periods of French rule and British administration (1815-1864). This unique history profoundly influenced the islands' architecture, culture, and traditions, creating a distinct identity within Greece. The Venetian influence is particularly evident in the architecture of Corfu Town and other settlements, while the British left a legacy including cricket in Corfu and roads throughout the islands.
The islands are characterized by lush vegetation due to higher rainfall compared to the Aegean islands, with Corfu particularly green with extensive olive groves. The Ionian Islands have a Mediterranean climate with mild, wet winters and hot, dry summers. Tourism represents the primary economic activity across all islands, supplemented by agriculture, particularly olive oil production. The islands maintain strong musical traditions, including kantades (serenades) influenced by Italian opera. Ferry services connect the islands to mainland Greece at ports including Igoumenitsa, Patras, and Kyllini, while several islands have international airports. The regional capital is Corfu Town.
