About Ikaria
Ikaria is an island in the North Aegean Sea, located west of Samos. The elongated island stretches 25 miles in length, covers 99 square miles, and has a population of approximately 8,400 residents. Agios Kirykos serves as the capital and main port on the southeast coast, while Evdilos on the northern coast operates as a secondary port.
The island is named after Icarus from Greek mythology, who according to legend fell into the sea nearby after flying too close to the sun. Ikaria is known for the longevity of its inhabitants, being one of the world's "Blue Zones" where people live significantly longer than average. Researchers attribute this to diet, lifestyle, afternoon rest, strong social connections, and the consumption of herbal teas and local wine.
The island features rugged mountainous terrain, with the highest peak reaching 3,435 feet, dense forests, and numerous hot springs. The thermal springs of Therma, near Agios Kirykos, have been used for therapeutic purposes since ancient times. The northern side, particularly around Armenistis and Nas, features beaches and has a more developed tourism infrastructure. Ikaria has a tradition of left-wing politics and during the Greek Civil War and subsequent period, it served as a place of exile for communists. The village of Christos Rahon in the island's center maintains traditional architecture and customs. The island's economy is based on agriculture, fishing, and increasingly, alternative tourism focused on wellness and nature.
